In a recent Twitter Space hosted by us at Staking Circle, we’ve invited several industry experts, such as Ankr, Obol Network, Puffer Finance, Genesis LRT, Inception LRT and Cubist, to discuss the intricacies of restaking and Eigen Layer. The conversation was rich with insights into the challenges and innovative solutions being developed to navigate the risks associated with restaking, particularly the threat of correlated slashing risk and current barriers to onboard users due to the intricate technical level of such technology.

The Complexities of Restaking

Restaking is not without its challenges, especially when considering the potential for slashing. Validators face the risk of penalties for network violations, which can be due to a variety of factors including bugs, attacks, and shared infrastructure vulnerabilities. As the ecosystem matures, the introduction of more Automated Validator Services (AVS) and restaking protocols amplifies these risks, making the development of safety measures a critical concern.

Balancing Innovation with Security

Our Twitter Space highlighted the need for innovation that does not compromise security. The discussion pointed out that as new technologies emerge, they must be accompanied by equally advanced anti-slashing measures. This is crucial to ensure that validators can operate without the constant fear of penalties, especially those that may be unjust due to factors beyond their control, such as client software bugs.

Mitigating Risks through Distributed Validators

The role of distributed validators, where Obol is a leader, was a key topic, with the consensus being that they are essential in mitigating risks. By distributing the validation process across multiple parties, the risk of correlated slashing is significantly reduced. This approach hedges against the possibility of a single point of failure, which can lead to the simultaneous slashing of multiple validators.

Governance and the Importance of Whitelisting

The significance of governance in the process of whitelisting AVSs was also underscored. With users entrusting their assets to restaking protocols, it becomes imperative to have a robust governance system that can filter out high-risk services. This ensures that only secure and thoroughly vetted services are integrated into the restaking ecosystem.

The Future of Restaking and Continuous Innovation

Looking towards the future, our Twitter Space conversation touched upon the evolving questions in the restaking space. It emphasized the need for ongoing innovation and participation from all stakeholders to navigate these uncertainties. Liquid staking providers and other participants must work together to address these challenges proactively. And overall the whole DeFi community has now the role of educator whereas protocols must optimize specific key friction points such as UX and UI.

User-Centric Approaches and Education

Protocols are increasingly focusing on user education and offering customizable strategies to make restaking more accessible. Simplifying the complexities and providing users with options that match their risk profiles are seen as essential steps towards wider adoption.

Strategies to Combat Slashing Risks

The discussion concluded with a focus on strategies to combat slashing risks. It was noted that validators need tools that can prevent network rule violations proactively. This includes the development of hardware-based key managers and other technologies that can verify every action taken by validators, ensuring compliance with network rules.

Conclusion

The Twitter Space organized by us at Staking Circle brought to light the collective determination to strike a balance between the rapid pace of technological advancement and the need for robust infrastructure security. As the staking ecosystem continues to evolve, the insights from this discussion serve as a guiding framework for developing safer and more efficient restaking practices that protect the interests of all participants.
